It's not easy buying a first home. For many the process is a mystery and the details of homeownership are unknowns. At HomeWorks of Virginia, it is our goal to educate clients and help them become more knowledgeable and feel more at ease during the home buying process. All classes and materials are offered at no cost to the clients. In order to help people with low to moderate income move into homeownership, we offer extensive education programs:

homebuyer education

As part of our homeownership program, we provide free homebuyer education classes for first time homebuyers. The classes help clients take the mystery out of the buying their first home. Through the classes, clients will lean different aspects of the home buying process including:

homebuyers club

The Homebuyers Club is an educational, self-help process that helps individuals by providing them with training and support that, along with their own determination and self sacrifice, enable them to become homeowners and improve their qualify of life.

Each club consists of 10-15 future homebuyers who meet once a month for 6-12 months. At each meeting, your club will discuss each other's needs, like overcoming credit problems, budgeting, money management and home purchase.

In order to become a club member, clients must first meet with one of our HomeOwnership Coordinators who will determine the client’s eligibility and needs that must be met in order for him/her to become a homeowner. There are no fees required to become a member. We only ask that our club members be determined and dedicated to work towards becoming homeowners!

financial fitness education

Becoming financially fit will not only help you achieve self-sufficiency, it will reduce your personal stress and improve your quality of life! Our Financial Fitness classes provide clients with the resources and tools to achieve their financial goals. These free classes are held monthly and cover the following topics:

VIDA matched savings program

Virginia Individual Development Account (VIDA) is a special savings program that helps eligible individuals gain financial literacy and builds assets. You will work with a our staff to open a savings account with either Wachovia Bank or BB&T. Each month you will deposit a minimum of $25 per month. For every dollar you save in this account, VIDA will match it with $2, up to $4,000. You could have as much as $3,000 to assist you in your home purchase!

The money that you save in this account can be used to purchase a home, start a business or for post-secondary education. As part of the program, you will complete a series of educational classes with our Homebuyer's Club. See below how you quickly and easily save with the VIDA program:
